(Tobacco Attitudes and Behaviors Survey
- TABS, 2005)
A population assessment conducted in the Spring 2006 in the
American Indian community in Colorado revealed that critical issues in the community
surrounding tobacco were intergenerational use of tobacco, the effects of second
hand smoke, and the desire to continued the use of ceremonial and medicinal
tobacco. Tobacco use is an accepted community and cultural norm.
American Indian people believe that tobacco is a sacred gift from the Creator
that has medicinal and ceremonial purposes. The medicinal and ceremonial uses
of tobacco do not include habitual use of commercial tobacco: cigarettes, cigars,
and smokeless tobacco.
