(Tobacco Attitudes and Behaviors Survey
- TABS, 2005)
Gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transexuals (youth and adult) use tobacco at a higher rate than the general population. A variety of recent studies of HIV-AIDS patients report tobacco use rates ranging from 45% - 60%. 59% of LGBT youth are smokers accordining to the centers for Diesase Control (CDC). 50% of people identifying as bisexual are smokers.
The current view of the community as expressed in recent focus groups suggests that some of the resistance to prevention and cessation is affected by the positive social aspects of smoking, lack of social outlets and supports that are non-smoking, expression of independence, some reference to low esteem and self worth, lack of culturally appropriate literature and a gap in comfort or relationship with a medical provider.
