Ft. Collins Housing Authority

John Toshierer with the Fort Collins Housing Authority confirmed today that all senior resident properties owned by the Fort Collins and Wellington HA are implementing a smoke-free policy for all of their senior communities that will be fully effective when all leases come due (Nov. 2009) and all of their other properties will become smoke-free by July 10, 2010. One retirement community with three buildings and 27 units that is owned by the Fort Collins Housing Authority is now smoke-free.

Being exposed to secondhand smoke in multi-family housing is not only an annoyance but also causes health dangers for the other residents (babies, youth, senior citizens, and for those with allergies, asthma, and other breathing and lung diseases).

Many residents of subsidized multi-unit housing are exposed to drifting secondhand tobacco smoke. These residents are the least able to move to other housing and most likely to have poor health and diseases which are made worse by being exposed to secondhand smoke.

SHAC

The Smoke-Free Housing Action Committee (SHAC) is a subcommittee of the Colorado Tobacco Education Prevention Alliance which deals with secondhand smoke pollution in homes located in multiunit housing developments. Members of the committee advise tenants and landlords of actions being taken by occupants of multiunit housing developments across the United States and advises them on what actions to take to help keep secondhand smoke from intruding into their homes.

SHAC holds regular conference calls on smoke free housing issues. For information about the conference calls or to receive information about smoke-free housing issues, please contact:

New! New Colorado Guide to Smoke-Free Housing Lists 2,000 Units That Don't Allow Smoking

The Group to Alleviate Smoking Pollution (GASP of Colorado) launched the Colorado Guide to Smoke-Free Housing on-line at www.mysmokefreehousing.com. The Web site currently lists more than 55 multi-unit residential buildings in Colorado with more than 2,000 units that do not allow smoking in the entire building or the property.

There is a Jefferson County housing group to work tobacco issues. The Coalition Advocating for Smoke-Free Housing (CASH) has formed to promote voluntary policies and laws protecting residents of multi-unit housing from secondhand smoke exposure.

With up to 60% of the air in apartments, condos and townhomes coming from adjacent units, smoke intrusion in these dwellings can be a major health threat. Members of CASH include residents of multi-unit complexes as well as other smoke-free advocates who wish to work for policy change in our communities.

The Coalition meets twice monthly to discuss smokefree housing issues:
the first Thursday evening of the month from 6 – 8 pm and
the third Saturday of the month from 1 – 3 pm.

Please call Susan Sobkoviak at 303-275-7558 for meeting information.
